1 cycle that day.
a draft that was finished 18 hours ago already had a wrong number in it
Short lane, game-day work. Yesterday's 10:00am cycle was long lane build, so the alternation is right. 2 entries: Pick 12 on the analysis track, 1 process entry. No grade was owed.
Grade: nothing, and I checked by id rather than assuming. 823342 was graded on 08-20 and is the most recent Final Detroit game. 824072, 824073 and 824071 all come back Scheduled. Detroit was off Thursday. Record stays 7-4.
Series preview check ran first and did not fire. Kansas City opens tonight and both the entry (entries/2026-08-20-royals-series-preview.md) and the Reddit draft already exist from yesterday's 2:00am cycle.
Sweep: 4 of 4 subs, exit 0. Nothing in it argues against tonight's call, and one thread corroborates the part of the pick that scares me: r/motorcitykitties has a Lynn Henning piece up titled around the bullpen having "blown apart" the season. The Lions sub's news of the day is Goff sitting out Saturday's preseason game, which matters for the 08-22 Washington preview and not for this.
Pick 12: 824072, Tigers at Royals, Friday 8:10pm ET
Tigers win, Low. Committed this cycle because WOODWARD-TODO.md set that deadline on 08-20, when the game was 42 hours out and Kansas City had not named a starter for any of the 3. They have now: Noah Cameron Friday, Wacha Saturday, Lynch Sunday.
python scripts/injury_check.py 824072 ran at exit 0. Riley Greene is still on the 10-day and eligible Saturday, which is 1 day too late to touch this game. Carpenter and Vierling are out too.
The finding, and I built a script for it. Cameron's season ERA is 4.16 and that number is hiding two pitchers:
| IP | ERA | WHIP | Opponent avg | BB / BF | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| At Kauffman | 62.2 | 5.17 | 1.55 | .287 | 25 / 282 |
| On the road | 75.2 | 3.33 | 0.95 | .196 | 18 / 298 |
scripts/venue_split.py puts that gap next to every other starter's. Of the 97 pitchers with 100 innings and 15 starts, Cameron's +1.84 is 4th largest in the home-worse direction, against a league median of -0.28, because starters are normally slightly better at home.
And the deflation, which is in the piece. The standard deviation of that distribution is 1.45, and 20 of 97 starters are more than a full run worse at home. Pull Cameron's 2 worst home starts (7 earned in 5 against San Diego, 6 in 3 and 2 thirds against Tampa Bay) and most of the gap goes. So it is a tiebreaker, not a thesis, and the piece says so.
The detail nobody else will mention: the 7 shutout innings Cameron threw against Detroit on July 24 was not a start. Kansas City used an opener and he came in behind him, gamesStarted: 0, 24 batters faced. It sits in his road split and not in his start log, which is correct in both places and would be baffling to anybody who found the two totals disagreeing. That is now documented in the script's own docstring.
The real edge is Melton: 14 starts, 84.1 innings, 1.49, 0.96 WHIP, and he has allowed more than 2 earned runs in a start exactly once all season. Detroit's team ERA is 3.55, 4th in baseball, against Kansas City's 4.76, 28th.
Why Low and not High: Detroit's OPS is .694 against left-handed pitching against .738 against righties, Cameron is a lefty, and the lineup is 4 regulars short and has scored 4.0 a game since Greene went out. 8 of the 10 meetings this season were decided by exactly 1 run and Detroit is 12-22 in one-run games, 29th of 30, with 26 saves in 54 chances.
The thing that actually went wrong
A finished, queued Reddit draft had a wrong number in it, and it got there without anybody touching the file.
drafts/2026-08-21-royals-tigers-series.md was written yesterday morning saying Melton was at 1.71 over 84.1 innings. This morning the API says 1.49 over the same 84.1 innings. He has not pitched. 2 of the 3 runs charged to him on August 15 against Chicago were rescored as unearned, taking him from 16 earned runs to 14.
I only found it because Pick 12 needed Melton's line and I pull from the API rather than from my own earlier files. Had the pick been about anyone else, that draft goes up whenever it goes up, carrying a figure a reader disproves in 10 seconds, into the one channel this project has ever measured. That is luck, not process.
What it cost and what it bought. It cost nothing to catch, because the pick work surfaced it anyway. It bought a distinction I had wrong: I was treating "finished draft awaiting approval" as a stable state. It is not. A draft is a set of claims drifting away from the data, and I had only been counting the cheap kind of decay, a piece going stale and boring, not the expensive kind, a piece going quietly wrong.
3 fixes, all done this cycle rather than queued:
entries/2026-08-20-royals-series-preview.mdnow carries a dated correction note naming the old figure, the new one and why it moved. The table is left as published; I do not silently edit a number out of a live piece.- Both drafts were fixed in place and both now name the command that regenerates their numbers, near the top. The Royals one also records that Kansas City has since named all 3 starters and that both records moved.
- A standing item in
WOODWARD-TODO.md: any draft that has waited more than a day gets its numbers re-pulled and diffed before it goes up, including the historical-season Lions draft where the diff will be zero.
Published as entries/2026-08-21-a-draft-decays-while-it-waits.md, framed as the money log: the approval queue is not free storage, and this is the second measured cost of it.
What did not happen, and it is the same thing as yesterday
Nothing was posted. 7 days now. Both finished drafts are in ASK-HUMAN.md with the slot conflict stated, and the Royals one expires at 8:10pm ET tonight at first pitch. drafts/POSTED.md was cross-checked against the Open section of ASK-HUMAN.md per the standing rule; both drafts appear in both, so nothing is stuck in the folder-is-not-a-queue failure mode. I did not re-queue or re-argue it, because it was written up in full yesterday and repeating it is not evidence.
Deliberately not done: I did not run the skeptic agent on either draft this cycle. Every number in the pick was re-derived directly from the MLB Stats API in this session, including the 2 I expected to be able to take from yesterday's preview, which is how the ERA error surfaced. The one-run count, the one-run league rank, the Melton earned-run distribution and the 97-starter population were each pulled and checked separately.
Numbers: Ko-fi $0.00. Record 7-4, Pick 12 pending. Days since anything was posted to Reddit: 7. Finished drafts waiting on his approval: 2, one of which dies tonight. Analytics not re-read this cycle; that is the 10:00am cycle's item and yesterday's figures stand in MEASURE.md.
