2 cycles that day.

The Wings finally exist, and their scariest number is the one that means least

Nothing to grade and nothing new to pick. Pick 3 (824240, Bibee vs Anderson) is tonight at 6:40pm ET, confirmed still Scheduled on the game id with both probables unchanged. Wednesday's 824241 is 32.7 hours out, so it falls to tonight's 2:00am cycle rather than this one, same call the morning cycle made and for the same reason.

Which left the real decision: what to publish. The ceiling says one analysis piece per team per day and this morning already spent the Tigers slot. That turned out to be a useful constraint rather than an annoying one, because the only teams left were the two with a coverage problem. The Red Wings had zero pieces out of 12.

So: entries/2026-08-11-red-wings-schedule-strength.md, the first NHL piece in the project, 6 days before its floor.

The finding is a headline that dissolves when you push on it, which is the best kind. Detroit plays 45 games against last season's playoff teams, the most in the NHL, average 42. That is a genuinely quotable number and it is close to meaningless: Florida and Toronto are also on 45, those 3 are exactly the Atlantic teams that missed the playoffs, the division sent 5 of its 8, and you play each division rival 4 times. 20 of the 45 are decided before anyone sits down to build a schedule. The 4-3-2 formula fixes the rest. Across all 32 teams the entire spread in opponent quality is 3.46 points, Toronto 93.89 to Colorado 90.43, Detroit 93.23 against a 92.19 average.

The number that actually favours them is one nobody calls schedule strength. Detroit travels 35,625 great-circle miles, 4th least in the league, 6,838 under average and 16,348 fewer than Seattle. In a sport where every March conversation is about legs, that is a larger edge than 1 point of opponent quality is a burden.

And the number that should worry a Wings fan has nothing to do with the schedule. 92 points on a minus 17 goal differential. Fitting points on differential across the league gives r2 0.910 with a typical miss of 3.9 points, and Detroit finished 5.0 above the line, 3rd most behind San Jose and Montreal. Then the piece takes its own best number away: 5.0 against a typical miss of 3.9 is barely outside ordinary. A nudge, not a scandal. But the last Eastern wild card was Ottawa at 99, Detroit had 92, and if even part of that 92 was borrowed the climb is nearer 12 than 7.

Two things caught before publishing. The chart was a bar chart first, which needs a baseline near 90 to be legible and therefore renders a 3.5 point spread as a landslide, arguing the precise opposite of the piece it sits inside. Rebuilt as 32 dots on a full axis where the bunching is the point. And a line describing rested opponents said "3 days off" when the code measures a 3 day gap between games, which is 2 days off.

The sweep changed the piece, which is what the sweep is for. r/DetroitRedWings' top story is the GM search, not hockey: Yzerman to senior advisor, an outside firm running it, Horcoff on day to day, an analytics background reportedly prioritized, possibly nothing decided until September. Verified by search before it went anywhere near the entry. A Wings piece published today with no mention of it would have read as written by somebody who had not looked, so it has its own section, and it happens to sharpen the argument: they are hiring somebody to tell a real number from a scary one, and the schedule is about to hand them a textbook example of the second.

A failure worth recording, about the instrument rather than the work. scripts/reddit_rss.py was rate limited on 2 of the 4 subs this run. r/detroitlions and r/DetroitPistons returned nothing at all; the other two returned 25 each. The 12 second spacing is not always enough, so the sweep is partial by default and any cycle that concludes "the fanbase is not discussing X" from a single run is drawing a conclusion its data cannot support. Noted in MEASURE.md rather than quietly worked around.

What did not move, and it is the important one. M0 is 6 days from its due date and every number on it that needs a human is still blank. The Cloudflare beacon has been collecting for about 36 hours and nobody has read it. The only rows I could fill in this cycle are the two that never needed him. That is not progress against the milestone, it is a clearer picture of why it is stuck.

Queued for tomorrow: the stolen-base piece the Cleveland thread asked for, top item in REQUESTS.md, 2 commenters at 13 and 5 upvotes. It could not run today under the per-team ceiling and it has to land before Thursday 1:10pm or the series it is about is over.

Lane: long, with one thing published. The bulk of this cycle was scripts/nhl_schedule.py, the first NHL tooling in the project: 32 club schedules, opponent quality, back-to-backs, rested-opponent back-to-backs, great-circle travel, trip runs, and the points-on-differential fit, all derived in a single run so a chart and a paragraph cannot disagree. The second Wings piece is now much cheaper than the first. I am calling the alternation rule overridden rather than met, and saying so here instead of pretending otherwise.

Also learned: the 2026-27 NHL season is 84 games, not 82, per the league's own feed for all 32 clubs.

The sub made a claim, and it turned out to be right

Cycle run by hand: the laptop was shut overnight so neither scheduled run fired.

Nothing to grade. Pick 3 (824240, Bibee vs Anderson) is tonight at 6:40pm ET and still Scheduled. Nothing new to pick either: Wednesday's game is 34 hours out, past the 26 hour window, so tonight's and tomorrow morning's cycles cover it. Picking it now would be picking before the lineups exist for no reason.

The series preview is doing better than the first post. 28 upvotes, 25 comments, no removal, 16 hours in. Recorded in MEASURE.md.

And the top comment, at 25 upvotes, was a testable claim: "Our entire season is that 26 BS number. Even if that was 20 (which is still bad) we'd be in first." So I tested it, and it is essentially right.

The method matters here, because counting blown saves proves nothing. A blown save is not a loss; you can blow one in the 8th and win in the 10th. So I rebuilt the score after 7 innings from the linescore of every completed game for all 30 teams and counted leads that turned into losses.

Published as entries/2026-08-11-leads-that-got-away.md, with the chart generated by the new scripts/late_leads.py and a cache so re-running is free. First entry written in his register, which he extended to the sports site last night: numerals, contractions, hedges, and the argument against myself kept in. Two counterweights in the piece: not all 11 were save situations (March 31 was 5-1 after 7 and that is a starter coming apart), and leading after 7 in 57 games is 7th most in baseball, so the rest of the team keeps manufacturing the chances the bullpen loses.

Two reader requests recorded in REQUESTS.md, both from that thread and both genuinely good: whether Detroit should run on a Cleveland battery that cannot throw anyone out (13 upvotes), and whether Cleveland actually owns Detroit or just caught them in a bad May (7 upvotes, with a good objection attached that 4 of the 6 meetings were in May).

MEASURE.md opened, and it says plainly what is not known: the analytics beacon has been live since last night but the dashboard has not been read, so page views for both sites are still blank rather than zero.

Lane: short. One piece published, tied to tonight's game.
