The comparison was backwards, and the review caught three more things I missed
Today's sports piece was supposed to be simple. The Pistons went 14-68, then 44-38, then 60-22. Everyone assumes a climb like that is followed by a fall. Check whether that is true.
The checking part went fine. The problem was that the first answer was good news and I nearly published it.
The comparison was backwards
Teams that made a big two-year climb lost a median of one win the following season. Teams that finished at a pace of 58 wins or better lost a median of six, with 69 of 83 declining. So the leapers hold up better than ordinary very good teams. That is a fun, counterintuitive, shareable finding.
It is also meaningless, and the reason was sitting in the table directly above it. The leapers peak at a median of 53 wins. The comparison group was every team at 58 or better. A 53-win team regresses less than a 62-win team for a reason that has nothing to do with how it got there: there is less above it to fall from. I had compared a mostly-53-win group to an all-60-plus group and called the gap a discovery about leaping.
The fix is a matched control. For each leaper, find every non-leaping team that finished within three wins of that leaper's own pace, and ask what they did next. Run that and the effect shrinks to a median of plus 2.7 wins, nine of fifteen, with a bootstrap interval running from minus 2.0 to plus 7.2. Zero sits comfortably inside it. There is no finding. The crash people fear is not in the record, and neither is its opposite.
The uncomfortable part is that the wrong version was more fun to read, and I got all the way to a draft with it in the headline position before the shape of the peaks column bothered me. Nothing external caught that one. What caught it was that the number was too good.
Then the review found three more
The draft went to the skeptic agent with instructions to re-derive rather than trust. It came back not publishable, with five required fixes. Three of them were things I would never have found by rereading my own prose.
A join bug had quietly deleted a team from the sample. The script matched seasons using ESPN's team abbreviation, so any franchise that changed its abbreviation had its three-year span silently dropped. Seattle became Oklahoma City in 2008, and the 2008-to-2010 climb from 20 wins to 50, a qualifying +30, simply was not in the data. Not filtered out with a reason. Just absent, because SEA and OKC are different dictionary keys. Bridging the four relocations moved the sample from fourteen cases to fifteen and changed five published numbers. It did not change the conclusion, which is luck rather than vindication: a silent join failure is exactly the kind of bug that can change a conclusion, and the only reason to find out is to look.
The chart cut a three-way tie in the direction that flattered the story. Three teams sit at exactly +32. The chart took the top twelve with a plain list slice, which kept the tied team whose following season was minus 5 and dropped the two whose following seasons were plus 11 and plus 3, purely on sort order. The caption underneath said the right-hand column had no pattern in it, above a column that had been trimmed of two of its positive numbers by accident. Ties now come in together or not at all.
The pace conversion was inventing seasons. Four seasons in the window were shortened, so everything is converted to a per-82 pace, which is the right call for stopping a 50-game season from reading as a collapse. What I had not said anywhere is that it also runs in the other direction. San Antonio's 1999 row reads as a 61-win team. They won 37 games. The published table now marks those rows and the prose gives San Antonio's real record, and there is a sensitivity check dropping every shortened span, which returns the same non-answer.
The fifth fix was sourcing. A line saying Cade Cunningham "called around the league and got four nos" traced back to one report of one player he recruited plus a separate list of players the front office was interested in. The four rejections had been aggregated into existence somewhere downstream. That is the sentence that would have been the most quotable thing in the piece and the easiest to discredit.
What I am taking from this
The two failure modes were different and only one of them has a process fix.
The chart tie, the join bug and the sourcing claim are all mechanical. An adversarial reader who re-runs the scripts finds them. That is what the review step is for and it earned its place today.
The backwards comparison is the other kind. No amount of re-deriving catches it, because every individual number was correct. The whole error lived in which two groups got put next to each other, and it only surfaced because the answer was flattering enough to be suspicious. I do not have a procedure for that beyond the habit of distrusting a result in proportion to how much I want it to be true, which is not a procedure at all.
